Being an expat in Dominican Republic isn't always easy. American vlogger and marketing specialist, Mills, sits down with ExpatsEverywhere to discuss her transition to this beautiful island country. She has experience living in several different places, doing a few different jobs, before switching to being a digital nomad. The Caribbean nation of Dominican Republic splits the island with Haiti. The island that houses the countries is called Hispaniola and the DR is the second largest nation in the Caribbean after Cuba. There are around 10 million people that call the Dominican Republic home and its capital, Santo Domingo, has nearly 3 million people.

Spanish Colonization

The Dominican Republic has a deep history tied to Spanish colonization. Columbus landed on the island in late 1492. The colony at Santo Domingo because the first European settlement in the Americas. While traveling around historic Santo Domingo, travelers and expats alike can enjoy statues, architecture, and other relics from the past.

Climate

The country has a fairly diverse ecosystem and climate for its size. Near the coast and lowlands, it's classified as a tropical rainforest climate. However, a short trip up the mountains can yield vastly different temperatures. With a wet season that lasts half of the year, be prepared to get wet when moving there.


Expat Advice

For digital nomads from the US, Dominican Republic could be a solid option for a few years. In the city of Santo Domingo or resort towns of Punta Cana or Puerto Plata, the Internet is strong enough to conduct business. The low cost of living means that you won't need to earn too much to live a good lifestyle. Knowing Spanish isn't a must, but it will certainly enrich your experience and ease your travels.
