An American Man in Saudi Arabia
Josh is a seasoned traveler and has lived in many countries. He had the desire to learn more about Middle Eastern culture so he moved to Saudi Arabia to work. Watch as he tells ExpatsEverywhere what it's like being a Westerner in this closed country.
Some of the things he talks about in his video on YouTube relate to being a Christian there, working with college students, and living on a compound. He didn't have any problems being a Christian there and walked away with several interesting encounters.
Compound living is something that's very common in the Middle East in general. However, it's even more prevalent for expats in Saudi Arabia. A compound is a walled community with a gate and guard. Compounds in Saudi Arabia very drastically when it comes to size and scope.
For example, Saudi Aramco Residential Camp in Dhahran has a population of 11,000 people living within it's walls. Inside this compound, there are a couple of schools, restaurants, parks, sports facilities, and even a 9-hole golf course. Josh's compound on the other-hand housed less than 100 people and had a swimming pool and club house, which had a gym, billiard table, and several meeting rooms to play games and socialize.
The tone of his video is quite positive, which is surprising to some as Saudi Arabia gets painted a certain way by the media. After you watch the entire video, we would love to know what you think about his expat experience there by leaving a comment in the YouTube comment section.
